The Momentum Was Real: A Look Back at NTE West and What’s Coming Next
Walking into NTE West, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I knew the reputation. I’d heard the stories. But nothing quite prepares you for the moment you step into a room of almost 800 independent optometrists, clinic owners, suppliers, and their teams. They were all there for the same reason: to grow, connect, and move the profession forward.
The very first handshake to the final song on the dancefloor perfectly captured the unstoppable energy of this year’s theme: Experience the Momentum.
A Community That Shows Up
What struck me most wasn’t the programming (though it was exceptional). It was the energy in the room: Independent optometrists from across Canada, openly sharing what’s working, challenging each other to think differently, and genuinely celebrating each other’s wins.
That’s the thing about this community: it lifts people up. The Prisms, Eye Recommend’s peer recognition program, are a perfect example. Watching colleagues acknowledge each other’s achievements made it clear that success here isn’t a solo act.
Bigger Than Ever on the Tradeshow Floor
NTE West opened with a milestone event—the largest tradeshow in Eye Recommend history. Featuring over 65 suppliers, dedicated networking areas, a welcoming social lounge, and an innovative new meeting scheduler, clinic owners had unprecedented opportunities for meaningful, one-on-one connections.
Programming Built for Real Practices
The keynote lineup set a high bar from day one. Jia Jiang opened with a talk on The Art of Achieving Ambitious Things, a reminder that growth requires the courage to move through discomfort. Day two brought Eric O’Neill, whose session on cybersecurity was equal parts eye-opening and immediately actionable for anyone running a clinic with patient data at stake.
Beyond the main stage, 18 breakout speakers covered the terrain that matters most to independent optometry today: AI agent development, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, marketing blind spots, leadership, and more. The depth and relevance of the sessions reflected something Eye Recommend takes seriously: education that meets members where they are.
Tying it all together, Canadian comedian Jessi Cruickshank kept the audience engaged between speakers and leading us into dinner and evening entertainment. We especially enjoyed her fashionable glasses, and the dance-off she orchestrated on stage.
Connection You Can't Replicate Online
The social programming matched the professional calibre of the event. An exclusive member reception at Teatro in Calgary set the tone early with an evening of genuine conversation and connection.
A live game show hosted by Eventology brought the laughs mid-event, and a western-themed closing night with cover band Side One closed things out in the best possible way.
These moments matter. NTE transforms the independent clinic experience into a collaborative journey, fostering deep peer relationships promote support, inspiration, and community.
