Supporting Global Vision Care: One Student's Journey to Costa Rica
At Eye Recommend, we believe that the future of optometry is built on service, leadership, and community impact. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight Muskaan Jhutty, a third-year optometry student whose commitment to accessible eye care extends far beyond the classroom. Jhutty is raising funds to provide optometry services to communities in Costa Rica.
A Passion for Giving Back
Originally from Surrey, British Columbia, Jhutty is currently studying at Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon. Over the past three years, Jhutty has been actively involved with AMIGOS Eye Care, a student-led nonprofit organization affiliated with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) International.
“What truly motivates me… is the opportunity to serve with purpose,” Jhutty says. “Vision plays a fundamental role in education, independence, and overall quality of life.”
AMIGOS Eye Care is one of the most active student optometry organizations in North America. Each year, its members participate in multiple service trips, collectively providing free, high-quality eye care to more than 5,000 patients annually. Their work spans communities across Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and underserved regions closer to home.
“Through AMIGOS, I have come to understand that optometry extends beyond technical expertise; it requires empathy, cultural awareness, and a willingness to grow alongside the people we serve,” said Jhutty. “Working closely with patients in different communities allows me to listen, adapt, and learn from their experiences, perspectives, and resilience.”
Why Support Matters
While the impact of these missions is profound, the cost of participation is significant. Travel, accommodations, meals, and medical supplies all add up quickly. Although AMIGOS Eye Care receives generous donations of glasses and equipment, many participants, like Jhutty, are students already managing the cost of their education.
Fundraising plays a vital role in making these trips possible. Every contribution directly supports patient care and helps bring essential vision services to those who need them most.
How Can You Help?
Donations supporting Jhutty’s Costa Rica mission must be received by March 6, 2026, to be applied to the trip. Supporters can learn more or donate directly through the group’s GoFundMe.
“These experiences continue to shape me not just as a future provider but as an individual, reminding me to lead with compassion, always stay open to learning, and remain deeply connected to the people I have the privilege of serving,” Jhutty says.
Investing in the Future of Optometry
Jhutty’s journey reflects the values we champion at Eye Recommend: community, integrity, expertise, progressiveness, and collaboration in eye care. The experience gained in Costa Rica will not only impact the patients she serves but will also shape the care students provide throughout her career.
We’re honoured to share Jhutty’s story and support the next generation of optometrists who are working to ensure that clear vision is not a privilege, but a right.
