Focal Point Episode 2: Joyce VanRooyen
Meet Joyce VanRooyen, Manager of Learning and Development at Eye Recommend.
Joyce VanRooyen didn't stumble into eye care. She grew up in it.
With roots in her father's optical lab in Medicine Hat and 14 years at Eye Recommend, Joyce describes her passion for the profession as "genetic." Over that time, she's watched the industry evolve and dedicated her career to helping teams bridge the gap between experience and innovation through authentic connections.
In this latest edition of Focal Point, Joyce digs into one of the most practical, and often overlooked, challenges in independent practice today: how to build a team where every generation feels valued, connected, and set up to contribute. Joyce breaks down each generation's unique "superpowers," including the deep-seated wisdom of Baby Boomers to the fresh, authentic drive of Gen Z.
Key strategies include:
- Creating a culture of mutual learning. Younger staff share fresh perspectives and tech-savviness, while seasoned veterans pass down invaluable industry knowledge. Practices that thrive are the ones where both feel empowered.
- Communicate across the gap. Connecting across generations sometimes means stepping outside your own comfort zone to meet someone where they are.
- Show your team they matter. Actively asking for ideas, feedback, and input from younger staff isn't just good leadership. It's how you build loyalty and long-term commitment.
Connection, Joyce reminds us, is a two-way street. Joyce emphasizes that by moving past stereotypes and leaning into the unique strengths of every generation, practices can safeguard their future and ensure every team member feels understood, seen, and valued.
